Presenting a Cup to Thomas Clutterbuck of Watford”
/// The Earl gifted this cup out of gratitude,
because thanks in mere words seemed like platitude.
After twelve years had passed,
that their friendship might last.
Will had Gainsborough capture his attitude.
/// The gift silver cup was on display,
but the fourth Earl would have things HIS way.
This NEW gift was clever;
it’s regifted forever.
This oil makes the cup “meta,” some say.
/// This oil portrait depicts presentation
of a silver Cup of Celebration.
But the artist has captured
two bored men, unenraptured.
You’d think SOMEONE would play-act elation.
/// Will looks backward while off’ring the cup.
Thom ignores him and doesn’t look up.
It’s a curious fact—
the men don’t interact.
Who’ll acknowledge the gift? Just the pup!
/// Neither looks in the other man’s eye.
Neither one will ‘fess up and say why.
There’s so strong an attraction,
gaze would lead straight to action,
and their friends and their kin would just die.
/// That gift is a mere silver token
of respect and a love gone unspoken.
It’s a “Loving Cup” called.
Would their wives be appalled
to know vows had so nearly been broken?
