Leo Putz, German
When She Awoke 4 Hours Later, Lettie Made a Mental Note Not To Order Decaf Next Time, 1908
Oil on canvas
/// It was 1908 in Late Autumn.
People wished her “Sweet dreams!” and she sought ‘em.
Since insomnia kept
her up nights, Klara slept
with barbiturates. (Boyfriend Max bought ‘em.)
/// Because sleeplessness soured her mood,
Max would slip some pills into her food.
When her meal had been chewed,
consciousness was subdued.
Horizontal without being wooed.
/// Introduced by the German firm Bayer,
(of barbiturates, the first purveyor),
“Veronal,” was the name
of the pill Max would claim
he slipped Klara to “make her mood gayer”.
/// As her vision began to defer
to the drug, Klara’s vision would blur.
In a dreamworld she’d dwell
made of blobs of pastel,
while her body, for hours, didn’t stir.
/// When she woke, Klara felt a bit groggy,
and the pills made her memory foggy.
Ending each dinner date
with her face in a plate
and her clothing disordered and soggy.
