/// Why’d The Lumberjack put down his axe?
Wood he’s cut now surrounds him in stacks.
The reason he stopped—
one last tree must be chopped
and he’ll rest before those final whacks.

/// He’s enjoyed felling trees all along,
but to pose for this painting seems wrong.
Artist’s choices have hurt:
Nixed his red flannel shirt,
and he hums Python’s “Lumberjack Song.”

/// Though he chops wood, he works with it, too.
He can whittle and build things brand new.
He bought his axe blade,
but the handle, he made.
Next he’ll fashion a left wooden shoe.

/// This tall lumberjack’s often linked to
his companion, an OX which is blue.
Paul’s pal, Babe, had long known
that this Bunyan had grown,
so he’s fetching a much larger shoe.
