/// Here’s A Boy with Dogs (puppies) and Kittens,
who does kitchen work for a mere pittance.
Do some French eat our pets
on their foreign baguettes?
That would never be done by the Britons!

/// We have heard of such things on the news—
of dark newcomers and their odd views.
“They’re eating the cats
and the dogs!” therefore that’s
how you do not need proof to accuse.

/// Some explain pets are drawn to the heat
in a kitchen and food scraps to eat.
And that’s why they abound
and why this French boy found
all these animals, cute and petite.

/// So, it’s possible this kid’s alright,
and pets don’t tempt his weird appetite.
Strangers we’re told to hate,
(and who probably ate
cats and dogs) don’t have toques quite so white. /s/

/// Cat gave birth to six kits in her litter.
When a bitch had some pups, the cat bit her.
Her brood was co-opted;
the puppies adopted.
(Cat’s mate wasn’t some weird hybrid critter.)

/// “They followed me home. Can I keep them?
With a broom to my apron I sweep them.
Given high cost of meat
they could be a fine treat.
Get a knife I can hone and we’ll eat them.”
