Barley left in the field
provides almost no yield.
Life in poverty holds little meaning.
/// These bright wildflowers ought to bring joy,
but they just make her think of the boy
who once gave them to her,
when she’d really prefer
something edible—berries or soy.

Some scant barley remained
and this batch she obtained,
which she’ll use for her own home-brewed beer.
