/// His old lab coat’s seen many adventures
that have earned “Doc” some praise (and some censures).
He once had apprenticed
to Washington’s dentist,
and ‘twas he carved those infamous dentures.

/// Here he takes a good sip— downs it straight.
Drinking whiskey that’s strong to sedate
any pain he might feel
after chewing his meal
with a badly self-made upper plate.

/// Did he study in school matters dental?
No, a soldier he’d been— Continental.
His white coat’s what he’d wear
when he cut soldiers’ hair
as their barber. (Teeth were incidental.)

/// Every barber back then was a surgeon.
They’d extract diseased teeth with no urgin’.
Years ago “Doc” was known
to cut hair, flesh or bone,
or to bleed soldiers, (what they called purgin’).

/// But bad teeth made a patient’s breath stink.
Haircuts don’t pay as well as you’d think.
Traumatized amputees
aren’t easy to please.
It’s no wonder “Doc” chooses to drink.
