/// Shakespeare’s words we’ve all heard (or else read)—
famous phrases birthed from that bald head.
But no sonnet or play
mentions Anne Hathaway.
Will’s will leaves her “his second best bed.”
/// The man’s œuvre was undoubtedly great,
yet for centuries scholars debate
whether genius could grow
in this plain, common schmo,
and his talent they seek to negate.
/// Some say only one of noble birth
could produce the best writing on Earth.
And to bolster their claim
they state Will spelled his name
different ways, (for whatever that’s worth).
/// “I’m no Bard, I’m the first to admit.
My verse hardly has half of his wit.
Yet the best of my stuff
gets some praise. Just enough
to ensure that, for now, I won’t quit.”
