/// Grandpa points to the clock as a sign
Henry’s up past his bedtime of nine.
Short-wave signal’s erratic,
the boy’s heard mostly static;
his addiction is hard to define.
/// If they’d let him, he stay up ‘til dawn,
hearing words from far off— headphones on.
Henry’s radio set
is the best model yet,
but his body betrays him— a yawn!
/// Why the boy built this short-wave by hand,
Grandpa simply cannot understand.
Henry ought to read tomes
with tales of Sherlock Holmes.
(Grandpa just started “The Speckled Band.”)
/// The boy’s earphones he slipped off his head,
to reluctantly head up to bed.
He turned off the device,
(secret turn on to vice).
All his pleas to stay up went unsaid.
/// In a very short time, things would change.
Around broadcasts, their lives they’d arrange.
T’would deliver their news,
even shape Grandpa’s views,
and cause kinfolk from kin to estrange.
