// When she’s Listening to the Sea Shell,
muffled sounds are perceived by Danielle.
She cannot hear them well,
but somehow she can tell
that they come from where merchildren dwell.
/// She’s been told it’s the “sound of the sea.”
In her six-year-old mind it must be
the soft far away wail
of a girl with a tail
who is lonely and cries “Come to me.”
/// But Danielle’s always proper and prim,
and won’t do reckless things on a whim.
She would grant the last wish
of a child who’s half fish,
but she’s never been taught how to swim.
/// Saw some shells on the sand. Got excited.
Picked one up. Heard the sea. Was delighted.
Put it back on the beach.
