/// Baron Paul stands with arms brusquely crossed.
Seems a man on whom humor is lost.
He looks crusty and gruff,
like he’ll take no one’s guff.
Paul conveys one must boss or be bossed.
/// It may, therefore, come as a surprise
that this man wins a Nobel Peace Prize
in nineteen oh nine,
which he didn’t decline,
(or regift to a man he’d despise).
/// From its cover, do not judge a book.
From one part the whole might be mistook.
True, this guy seems unkind
with no peace on his mind,
but his actions said more than his look.
/// Baron Paul Henri d’Estournelles
de Constant, in fact, did quite well.
As a diplomat for
France he helped avoid war.
His wife, Daisy, a U.S.A. belle.
/// ‘Gainst colonialism Paul fought,
(as all right-thinking people then ought).
He backed Zola with pride,
taking Dreyfus’ side,
and disarmament’s virtues he taught.
/// Men have various options for where
they will grow, or else shave, facial hair.
On his cheeks there is zip,
but this guy’s upper lip
sprouts a brush that a walrus might share.
/// A dour, dapper man, (oddly named Frost),
stood around with his arms always crossed.
I asked “Why” and was told
it’s because he hates cold
since from frostbite four fingers he’d lost.
