/// Brave Godiva, a Lady with pride,
gathers courage for going outside.
To cut tax, she’s agreed
to climb nude on her steed
and then, naked through Coventry, ride.
/// Husband Leofric’s taxes oppressed
all the people and he wrongly guessed
that she’d never agree
to ride where all could see
her allure when completely undressed.
/// In response to what she undertook,
all the townspeople swore not to look
when Godiva rode by,
but one crass, sleazy guy
peeped and, all that he’d promised, forsook.
/// Though her long golden hair, unconfined,
shielded parts of her, front and behind,
an unfortunate breeze
revealed what that guy sees.
That’s when “Peeping” Tom, some say, went blind.
