Musician Crashing After the Adrenaline Rush of His Harp Solo, 1832
Oil on canvas
/// In the forest A Harpist is Dozing
while a creature’s nearby, slowly closing
the small, narrowing gap
as he’s taking his nap.
Will his gnawed corpse be found decomposing?
/// That wild animal, nearing the stream,
has a rabbit-like head, it would seem.
But a much bigger beast,
(it seems deer-sized, at least).
Is this huge stalking bunny a dream?
/// In the wild, rabbits tend to be shy.
To approach this old harp-playing guy,
he’d be rabid, or worse.
This behavior, perverse,
makes me think the man’s slayer draws nigh.
