/// Poet Jacob van Mærlant penned
a great chronicle which would transcend
other works of his time.
(Makes me wonder why I’m
writing limericks that few comprehend.)
/// To earn fame as a poet I fear
is an outcome I’ll never come near.
My best work isn’t “grand”
and the doggerel brand
has got heroes like Seuss, Nash and Lear.
/// He wrote Spieghel Historiæl. Much
of the history, Flemish and Dutch,
was recorded in it.
Matchless Medieval Lit,
made a masterpiece by Jacob’s touch.
/// In this painting, we see Jacob rapt
by his task as he works to adapt
another man’s prose,
and each word that he chose
must be accurate, artful, and apt.
/// When he writes, Jacob stiffens his spine.
Stands up straight and to bend he’ll decline.
Though, to us, this seems odd,
his brain’s closer to God,
which inspires him. (And so does strong wine.)
