The “Two Sisters” full title discloses
it’s a Study from multiple poses
for a piece called “The Promises.”
Are they daughters of Thomas’s?
They are sisters— note chins, lips and noses.
/// His large painting, (this study’s a section),
honored fighters in French insurrection.
Portrayed by Thomas Couture,
symbols of France’s future,
“The Promises” promise perfection.”
/// One assumes that the black-haired girl’s older.
Younger sis dozes off on her shoulder.
Seems the elder girl’s stare
has a questioning air,
showing sadness, and yet her eyes smolder.
“Two Sisters” (Study for “The Promises” in The Enrollment of the Volunteers of 1792) by Thomas Couture. The two girls were to have appeared near the center of the large allegorical tribute to the unification of French social classes, standing next to the figure representing “Liberty” and behind a large cannon.
/// Being women alone can be hard.
By real dangers they’re mentally scarred.
When they find they must roam
far from safety and home,
one girl naps while the other stands guard.
