/// Bakfark holds up his hands and appears
to be fending off figures he fears.
Three bald topless men float
in mid-air and they gloat.
Must be demons; they have pointed ears!

/// He’s the Lutenist of good Queen Bona.
Are these imps real, or is he alone? A
frightful nightmare it seems.
Bakfark’s prone to bad dreams;
quite unlike his heroic persona.

/// There’s a harp he hears one of them play
but, though urged to look, he turns away.
Might the three demons’ goal
be to buy Bakfark’s soul?
If it is, he is answering “Nay!”

/// Here in Poland, he played for the Royal
Court, to which he was grateful and loyal.
Where he’s from, Transylvania,
may account for this mania.
Demons thrive in his rich native soil.

/// At one point, Poland’s King grew annoyed
with him, sending him into the void.
And just as he was banished,
Bakfark’s property vanished.
He was homeless now and unemployed.

/// We don’t know how his exile was earned,
but through Europe he wandered, concerned.
Many details are vague,
but he died of the plague,
and, by law, all he’d touched was then burned.

/// So, this painting with symbols has shown
that our futures can never be known.
Though renowned for the lute,
Bakfark still got the boot
and he died, terrified and alone.

/// Bona’s husband exiled and abused
Bakfark just because he was accused
of the Devil’s tune playing.
What this painting is saying
is the lutenist clearly refused.

(Or, perhaps I’m completely confused.)

/// Bakfark’s name has earned much condemnation.
A disgrace to the whole Polish nation.
But this innocent soul
had not been born a Pole.
The whole thing’s a False Flag operation!
