/// Maman points down at the broken dish,
and her sad four-year old has one wish:
That she won’t make him state
why he shattered that plate.
(She had served him a dinner of fish.)

/// If she knew he’d protested the food
in a manner so reckless and crude
she’d be more than annoyed
for the dish he’d destroyed
was too shattered to ever be glued.

/// Rémy acts contrite, mournful and meek—
(as most do when forgiveness we seek).
Yet, just minutes before,
when the plate hit the floor,
he’d cried “Opa!” as though he were Greek.

/// She pinched hard on his tender left ear,
as a warning: “Don’t ever go near
my good china, you hear?
Do I make myself clear?”
Lessons taught— using torment and fear.

/// Less “enlightened” folks lived in those days.
Kids today get time-outs and cliches.
Discipline is less drastic.
Toddlers eat food off plastic,
and for nothing at all they get praise.

Ollie held out his dish
hoping she’d grant his wish.
In a rage, she smashed it on the floor.

/// Her strict parenting style taught her son
not to ask for more after he’s done.
He soon learned to comply,
but in secret he’d cry.
Twelve years later he found his Mom’s gun…
