Other than the dates he flourished as an artist (1893-1917), I could find no info about this artist, not to be confused with Stuart Davis (1892-1964), online. Of course, he currently has no Wikipedia page in any language.

This says 1863-1947 was his lifespan.

/// In the Palace at Knossos in Crete,
a new mural was nearly complete.
Friendly Critics now wonder
if intention or blunder
explains knee-length tan socks, but bare feet.

/// Though his critics are friendly, they mock
the nude figure who squats on a rock.
Floating snake seems to snap
at the man’s white cloth cap,
while in each hand he’s holding a sock.

/// The girls say, “What you drew would suggest
that the man just sat down to get dressed.
But the thing we find shocking’s
wearing nothing but stockings
and a fake white beard. Is this a jest?”

/// Painter Linus is keenly aware
that his critics, at him, sometimes stare.
The man’s thigh muscles tighten
when they peer up his chiton
and then criticize what they see there.

/// “OK, ladies, just give it a rest.
I’m not lopsided, as you’d suggest.
Very few have the fortune
of pure right-left proportion.
Can your boobs pass the very same test?”
