/// Here Mathilde is Holding a Child.
The two hug and yet neither one smiled.
Though she’s mostly rough sketch,
this kid seems like a kvetch
who’ll be squirming soon, then going wild.
/// The child feels strong arms enfolding her.
Two hands vibrate so fast that they blur.
Mattie rubs the child’s tummy
but the girl still feels crummy.
Next she’ll try a small sip of liqueur.
/// Today’s painting, by Mary Cassatt,
has no depth— seems unfinished and flat.
As an impressionist,
in this work she’d resist
showing backgrounds or details like that.
/// Cassatt’s paintings, with masterful splendor,
often show mother love, sweet and tender.
Mary did achieve fame,
but not all the acclaim
won by peers of the masculine gender.
/// The Impressionists don’t seem to see
what they look at as do you and me.
Using color and light
it’s not real, but it’s right.
My impression? That child needs to pee.
