The steady, untroubled gaze/
of Rutherford Birchard Hayes/
Is a clear indication/
That he lacks information/
And he lives in a happy daze..///
The disinterest he displays/
Underlies all his wanton ways/
He lives in a haze/
In which crime sometimes pays/
And, indeed, sometimes even wins praise///
His visage is somewhat demonic/
Or perhaps it is merely moronic/
His supporters agreed/
Twas his task to impede:/
He’s a plague – he just isn’t bubonic.
1876 Presidential Election— Republican Hayes vs
Democrat Tilden
/// POTUS Rutherford B. (Birchard) Hayes
became President in unique ways.
Fewer votes went to him.
Tilden “won,” (margin slim).
Neither beat the Electoral maze.
/// So, when no one’s been duly elected,
by the House someone must be selected.
A corrupt compromise,
which progressives despise:
Southern Dems picked Hayes when they defected.
/// Back then, all the Republicans stood
for this view: Ending slavery was good.
Hayes OK’d the instruction
that he end Reconstruction.
Jim Crow reigned as the South knew it would.
/// The name “Rutherford” can be misread,
though it’s fine when we’re hearing it said.
But, to tell you the truth,
you could chop off the “Ruth”
(being Ruthless) he’s “Erford” instead.
> or <
/// Hayes is dressed in a style to connote
that he can’t afford losing one vote.
We can’t focus our eyes on
the event(-ful) horizon
of his massive black hole of a coat.
