“Hey Watson, You Can Stop Looking. I Found My Phone,” 1892
Engraving
/// The first long-distance call had gone well,
despite frowns from the gathered cartel.
And the man on the phone
has a face that’s not known,
but be sure that his name rings a bell.
/// Bell invented the phone? No, not quite.
But he got the first patent all right.
Meucci led the way,
(Truth is in shades of gray.)
Often history’s not black and white.
/// The first person to build a true phone
was Italian, Meucci alone.
Later on was a Frenchman,
before Bell and his henchmen
got the patent assigned as his own.
/// They’re amazed by this long-distance call.
Far away now seems just down the hall.
New York linked to Chicago!
Yet, today, Pago Pago
can be called on a phone sleek and small.
/// The whole globe is now truly connected,
now that wireless has been perfected.
Your phone goes where you go.
No cord is status quo,
and no long distance fees are collected.
