Info, or links that point to more info, about this artist can be found here, and here, perhaps in addition to his Google translated French Wikipedia page (contradicts most who list his lifespan as 1845-1875).

/// They’re both elegant; both connoisseurs,
of fine art (which their patron prefers).
But, to boost their art shows
they attempt to compose
funny captions— they’re entrepreneurs!

/// Every painting was put on display
at a chic and exclusive soirée.
The smart guests “in the know,”
read the captions below.
(They preferred them when slightly risqué.)

/// Their droll captions were mercifully brief,
and not rhymed which was quite a relief
to the critics, whose hearts
beat to visual arts.
Reading poetry just brought them grief.

/// “There’s a space just that size near my door,
and the colors do match the decor.
I don’t know what it means,
(I prefer Bible scenes),
but the painter’s a creed I abhor.”
