/// Three girls taking a break for their lunch
in the fields find there’s little to munch.
In their basket just fruit,
(and with soft spots to boot),
but at least there’s some (mostly wine) punch.

/// They’d agreed to take turns packing meals;
now their anger is what Lizzie feels.
She’d spent last night in frolic,
(a full-fledged alcoholic),
so back home her lamb-stew pot congeals.

/// After taking a head-clearing slug
of the “hair of the dog” in that jug,
Lizzie searched for their food,
despite comments quite rude.
Through the lunch-basket’s contents she dug.

/// As she searched for some edible chunk,
Lizzie realized how low she had sunk.
There’s a towel up there,
worn to cover her hair.
(She had tried to do cornrows while drunk.)

/// No, the stew she’d prepared wasn’t there,
(and a meat course for luncheon was rare).
She’d tried keeping it hot
in a sealed metal pot,
but forgot it while styling her hair.

/// All they have is a quarter-hour break.
Going home would, more time than that, take.
They’ll go hungry today
and they’ll make Lizzie pay.
Next dessert she’ll get no chocolate cake.
