/// Gari Melchers’ “The Sisters” both stand
on a field near their town, hand-in-hand.
The tall one can recall
when that green skirt and doll
had been “handed-down” as Momma planned.
/// Growing up meant she gave up some toys.
(“Soon you’ll only be thinking of boys.”)
But no plaything beats this:
to be Greta’s Big Sis.
Family love— there are few greater joys.
/// As they stand there on that grassy hill,
there’s no chores which they have to fulfill.
They can wander and play
with the goats ‘til midday,
and for now they are only kids, still.
/// There are few things they could see on earth
as instructive as watching a birth,
or view livestock “combine”
heeding nature’s design.
They can learn a lot, for what it’s worth.
