/// Zośka stopped to rest, hugging a birch,
as she sped through the woods on a search.
This was her wedding day,
but the groom ran away.
She’d been left in the lurch at the church.
/// Now she thought about climbing that tree
high enough to be able to see
forest paths where he might
be on foot, taking flight
from his bride and their baby-to-be.
/// She’d been smitten the first time they met.
Now he’d publicly ditched her… and yet,
the fact that he’d falter
today at the altar
she’d gladly forgive and forget.
/// Once again, Zośka called out his name
and, this time, to the clearing he came.
He’d felt panic and dread,
but fresh air cleared his head.
Honor, duty and love outweighed shame.
