/// She dismisses this love smitten man
with her back and a wave of her fan.
Gifts he’d offered before
now lay, spurned, on the floor.
In the “race for her heart”— also ran.

/// She’d been wed to a wealthy young Duke,
but he’d died in a horse-riding fluke.
Two years mourning just ended.
Then these “suitors” descended.
Brash effrontery earned her rebuke.

/// He had noticed she’d quit widow’s weeds
and, that same day, the rascal proceeds
to too boldly pursue her.
Now, this unwanted wooer
dared to speak to her of “women’s needs.”

/// Born immune to blind Cupid’s “Love Spell,”
she would never on thoughts of sex dwell.
As for heartfelt emotion
and chaste total devotion,
her dog suits the cold Duchess quite well.
