(These are two separate paintings by Robinson: “In the Grove” and “The Cowherd.”)

/// In the Grove stands The Cowherd. Right now
she is joined by an elderly cow.
It has sadly gone dry;
gives no milk when they try.
She’ll be steaks soon, or pulling a plough.

/// It appears that the cow disapproves
that the girl, lost in thought, barely moves.
Shepherds tend to their sheep.
This cowherd seems asleep
and ignored sounds of oncoming hooves.

/// Her Mum used to read plays by the Bard.
There’s one quote the girl can’t disregard:
“The cowherd,” it said,
“is a thousand times dead.”
The Brave only die once! (Quote’s been marred.)

/// Husband won’t take the time now to strip.

Finished four minutes after “unzip.”

That is still long enough;

(he must have “the right stuff”),

but he lies when he says “just the tip.”
