/// Lucien Rosengart at his Work Table
holds his pen with a grip that’s unstable.
In a box on his desk
hides a bird that’s grotesque.
The name “Shoebill” appears on its label.
/// I suppose now, (upon second look),
that is isn’t a bird, it’s a book
at the painting’s far right.
But it seemed at first sight
like a “whalebill.” (I guess I mistook.)
/// At the left, something looks like a snake,
but Lucien has no reason to quake.
It’s the lamp’s power cord
which he always ignored,
so he didn’t make that same mistake.
/// At his desk, with extortion notes cluttered,
the man sat and he, to himself, muttered:
“The real cause of my woe
is she never said, ‘No.’
Is it my fault, when stressed, the girl stuttered?”
/// If the girl’s blackmail letters just stopped,
and her plans to go public were dropped,
he could solve this, he swore.
(It had happened before.)
This new love child he’d raise and adopt.
/// Some claimed he was, by young men, beguiled,
and had never a female defiled.
And then blackmail he’ll pay
to keep scandal away.
But this doesn’t explain the love child!
