/// Sad. Her Portrait’s not all one might wish.
Stiff and dour, she seems like a “cold fish.”
Lost that sweet bloom of youth.
The unfortunate truth
is that Eleanor Petre’s no dish.
/// But, perhaps we just simply don’t “get” her.
In a positive light she’ll look better.
She is nurturing, pure,
and is cultured, I’m sure.
She will grow on us all, if we let her.
/// Still, there’s one thing I don’t understand.
It’s that black thing she holds in her hand.
My best guess— a lorgnette,
(though no cash would I bet).
It has lenses and through them she scanned.
/// These specs hang from her neck on a chain.
They aid reading fine print with no strain.
It’s a prop she can use
to project social cues.
People see her and think she’s a brain.
