/// Before Washington led us to war, he
had commissioned a banner, “Old Glory.”
That first flag George designed,
Betsy Ross then refined.
At least, that was her grandchildren’s story.

/// She used Great Britain’s colors in ours,
but removed all diagonal bars.
Ross decided to “fix”
what George sketched out with six
points and sewed thirteen five-pointed stars.

/// Those, in History, deeply immersed,
know that Betsy Ross was reimbursed
for the flags which she made.
They were proudly displayed,
but there’s no proof that her flag was first.

/// George, a gentleman, had superb manners.
He knew Betsy obeyed the flag planners.
He would not have blamed her;
(no vexillographer),
and saluted her bosom, not banners.
