Having learned in the school of hard knocks
/He prefers the shape of the box/
Which bears on his back/
Instead of a sack/
To carry his bagels and lox.
/// He’s an activist, keen to attack
every con artist, sell-out and hack.
He walks miles, town to town,
hoping to win renown
with his soapbox strapped tight on his back.
/// At the first major crossroads he reaches,
Mees climbs up on his box giving speeches.
Sometimes, when he gets bored,
(or he’s being ignored),
he takes up a collection and preaches.
/// Some object to his spiel; he’s not cowed,
even when people curse him out loud.
A pink sack holds his lunch.
As he walks he will munch
on some veg’tables thrown by the crowd.
/// Not a crowd-pleaser, Mees cannot cope.
He’s lost confidence, faith, heart and hope.
As a speaker, he stinks.
Hitting bottom, Mees thinks,
“Better fill up this box and sell soap.”
/// All his roommates deride his bad form,
bringing pizza like this to the dorm.
Held on end, the guys scoff,
all the toppings slide off.
“Maybe so, but this keeps my back warm.”

/// The sharp cleats on the first baseman’s shoe,
injured Hoover, who now plans to sue.
Testimony’s rehearsed.
Don’t know who is on first,
but right now the first base is on Hoo.
