/// Jacob taught his four children with rigor,
but Maria, eighteen, starts to snîgger.
Can The Microscope scan
do what he said it can?
“This device will make tiny things bigger!”

/// When she laughed, Jacob asked her to state
what’s so funny? “This gadget is great.”
“So it seems. May I borrow
it from you for tomorrow?
My new boyfriend and I have a date.”

/// Jacob Bailey views here with elation,
“inner labyrinths of all creation.”
He attempted to share
nature’s secrets laid bare
to his kids as “divine” education.

/// As a West Point Professor he taught
men who readied themselves to have fought
all our land’s future foes,
and no warrior knows
when he might, in  germ warfare, be caught.

/// Mother’s dogma sees science as sin.
Against faith no mere logic can win.
He should take this advice:
Claim he built the device
to count angels that dance on a pin.

/// In “The Great War” we know millions died.
Complex conflict sparked by leaders’ pride.
Yet, before World War 2,
what was called “Spanish Flu”
killed far more, it cannot be denied.

/// Perhaps science will show us some day
how to make disease deaths go away.
As for warfare, it seems
ending that is just dreams.
Wars persist despite how much we pray.
